Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19th, 1808. Poe had always been a very somber and depressing writer mostly because of his very tragic life which began with his mother's death on December 8th, 1811. Poe was only 3 years old when his mother past away. John Allan took Poe under his care. John Allan was never a very caring father. Whenever Poe needed help, especially financially, he never helped. When Edgar Allan Poe was older, he was sent to college. Poe enrolled in the University of Virginia. During his years at the university, he published the book Tamerlane and Other Poems. Today this book is so rare, it can cost around $200,000. But Poe has to leave college because of lack of funds. On May 26th, 1827, Poe enlisted in the army and served for 2 years. After leaving the army, Poe returned to Baltimore where he lived with his Aunt Clemm. Many years past and in 1835 he started editing for the Southern Literary Messenger. Not much later did he marry his young cousin, Virginia Clemm, on May 16th, 1836. During their marrige, Poe wrote one of his most famous poems called The Raven. It was about a husband who just lost his wife and is visited by a raven. The Raven became an overnight success however, he earned a mere $14 for poem. Even though Edgar and Virginia had been struggling with poverty all their life, they were very happy together and nothing came between them except the disease of Tuberculosis. The year of 1846 was a very tough one for Poe because he had to watch his wife suffer from the same disease that took his mother's life. On January 30th, 1837 Virginia dies. Some say that her death was strangley foreshadowed by The Raven, a poem he wrote just two years earlier. Because of Virginia's, Edgar Allan Poe started to drink alot more and waste whatever money he had on alcohol. Poe lived in a small cottage in Fordham alone for the last years of his life however, this is all that is known about his doings. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7th, 1849 at the age of 40 after being found unconcious in the street. The cause of his death is unknown but most suspect it was from alcohol abuse. Poe was originally buried in 1849 in a unmarked grave. Many family members started to raise money to fund a memorial for Baltimore's neglected poet and by 1874, they did. On November 17th, 1875 the memorial was dedicated to Poe. Everything was fine with the memorial except that they has engraved the wrong birthday. He was born on January 19th, not January 20th as indicated on the grave. Edgar Allan Poe was a remarkable poet and some people deeply respect that. Ever since 1949, there has been a mysterious stranger that leaves 3 roses on his grave the night of his birth. This tradition went on for many decades until it was sadly broken when no visitor came by last January. No one ever figured out who the visitors were or why exactly they left the roses as a tribute, but everyone respected them and were deeply saddened when the tradition came to an end.
